Advantages of Services in Manhattan Gastroenterology
Hemorrhoids are swollen and inflamed veins that can cause discomfort and bleeding in the rectum and anus. If you suspect hemorrhoidal disease, you should always be evaluated with a thorough consultation and examination by a physician for an accurate diagnosis, treatment plan and to exclude a serious illness or condition such as colon or anal cancer. Hemorrhoidal disease is just one of the many causes of rectal bleeding and lesions around the anus that need evaluation. Rectal bleeding can be a symptom of any type of colorectal or anal cancer, which can be cured if detected early.
Piles are extremely common. Piles are a very common occurrence. Approximately half of the population develops symptoms of this health condition by the age of 50 [1]. Internal hemorrhoids form inside your anal canal, whereas external hemorrhoids form under the skin around your anus. If blood pools in an external hemorrhoid, it may form a clot called a thrombus. This condition can result in severe pain and inflammation.
This health condition can be very painful. For the best hemorrhoid treatment options, including laser hemorrhoid treatments, see our NYC hemorrhoids doctors. Emergency appointments are available at the NYC doctor’s office.

Rectal bleeding (medically known as hematochezia) refers to any blood passing from your anus. However, rectal or anal bleeding is commonly assumed to refer to bleeding from the rectum or your colon. It can manifest as blood in your stool, toilet paper, or the toilet bowl. The blood in the stool caused by rectal bleeding from the anus can range from bright red to dark maroon to a dark tarry color.
Rectal bleeding can be a symptom of colorectal or anal cancer, which can be treated if caught early. In addition to a complete physical exam and medical history, colonoscopy is the gold standard for visual evaluation of your colon for an accurate diagnosis. It can detect polyps, mass lesions, abnormalities of the intestine lining, and a variety of other causes of your symptoms.
This condition can also be caused by bleeding hemorrhoids, anal fissures, colitis, or other diagnosable and treatable conditions. Disorders higher up in the digestive tract can also lead to bleeding from the anus.

Colonoscopy is the gold standard screening exam used to look for colorectal cancer (commonly referred to as colon cancer) that is recommended in patients without symptoms aged 45 or over (or earlier depending on risk factors such as family history, polyps, and other factors) that should be discussed with your local gastroenterologist. Coloscopy is used to look for polyps or other growths in the colon with the goal of prevention and early diagnosis of colon cancer.
Our physicians use a long, flexible tube called a colonoscope. This device, about as thick around as a finger, has a video camera on its tip and sends images to a video monitor, where the doctor can observe its trip from your rectum to the deepest part of your colon. Colonoscopy is also used to evaluate patients with a wide array of digestive symptoms, including rectal bleeding, chronic diarrhea, chronic constipation as well as many other symptoms as part of a complete evaluation for a proper diagnosis.
